「信頼で世界をつなぐ：日本の国際協力のこれまでとこれから」“Leading the world with trust: the Past and Future of Japan’s International Cooperation”

5月14日、JICA（国際協力機構）理事・井本佐智子氏をお迎えし、「信頼で世界をつなぐ：日本の国際協力のこれまでとこれから」をテーマにお話を伺いました。

　井本理事の講演で強調されていたのは、「支援とは一方的に与えるものではない」という理念でした。JICAが目指す支援のあり方は、あくまで「自国の人々が自らの力で成長していくための後押し」をすること。これは単なる援助ではなく、対等なパートナーとしての信頼関係に基づくものです。

　講演ではJICA海外協力隊についても紹介がありました。特に若い世代が異文化の中で活動し、現地の人々と共に時間を重ねることは、「知識の伝達」を超えて、心の通った国際理解の第一歩となること。これはまさにJICAが大切にする「人を育てる支援」の具体例でもあります。

　質疑応答では、JICAの支援で来日した留学生から感謝の言葉が寄せられました。他にも「JICAが掲げる２０のグローバルアジェンダの優先順位についてどうお考えか？」といった鋭い質問が寄せられ、井本理事の一つひとつの回答に、参加者が深く頷く姿が印象的でした。

　今回のセミナーは、「国際協力とは何か」「自分にできることは何か」をあらためて考える機会となったのではないでしょうか。

On May 14, we had the pleasure of hosting a special seminar featuring Ms. Sachiko Imoto, Senior Vice President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as our guest speaker. The theme of her talk was: “Leading the World with Trust: The Past and Future of Japan’s International Cooperation”

During her lecture, Ms. Imoto emphasized the principle that “support is not something given unilaterally.” JICA’s approach to international cooperation is based on empowering people in partner countries to grow through their own efforts. Rather than providing one-sided aid, JICA focuses on building mutual trust and partnerships.

Ms. Imoto also spoke about the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) program. When young people work in different cultural environments and spend time with local communities, they do more than transfer knowledge - they lay the foundation for genuine international understanding. This is a concrete example of JICA’s core philosophy of “support that nurtures people.”

During the Q&A session, a student currently studying in Japan with JICA support expressed heartfelt gratitude. The audience was left with a strong impression as Ms. Imoto responded with insight and sincerity to thoughtful questions, such as, “How do you determine the priorities for the twenty JICA Global Agendas?”

This seminar provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the questions, “What is international cooperation?” and “What can I do to contribute?”
